Hotels and restaurants association of Bhutan complain against AirBNB

Hotels and restaurants association of Bhutan (HRAB) put up a written complaint to the ministry of Trade and Industry and Tourism Council of Bhutan against AirBNB.

AirBNB is a online hotel and local homes reservation portal. The accommodation offered on AirBNB range from local homes to family run apartments. The price of these accommodation range from US$10 to US$40.

Some people who have book through AirBNB feel that some of the places offered on AirBNB are far better than most three star hotels in Bhutan.

In Bhutan, only regional tourists can book their own hotels and can travel on their own without a guide. All international tourists must book through a Bhutan based agent and must avail all services through them.

HRAB feels that these local accommodations are not legal and they do not pay taxes. Since most book online through AirBNB they feel their business is being ruined.

Today there are over 1000 private accommodation registered on AirBNB. That means over 1000 people are indirectly employed. Government is stressing so much on creating employment. This is one way to employ our youth.
